Arashiyama flourished as a villa resort for aristocrats in the Heian period (794-1185) and is also famous as the place where the Hyakunin Isshu (100 poems) were compiled. It is a place with a different atmosphere from the centre of Kyoto.

It is a fascinating place where the natural beauty of the mountains and rivers in each of the four seasons blends with Japanese culture and is dotted with shrines, temples and other historical buildings that reflect each era.

#1 Tenryuji Temple

The Sogenchi Garden at Tenshunji Temple is a garden that incorporates nature as it is into art through 'borrowed scenery'. Enjoy the Japanese artistry that blends beautifully with the natural surroundings.

#2 Walking in Arashiyama

Cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in summer, autumn leaves in autumn and snow in winter... Arashiyama offers a taste of each of the four seasons. Its vegetation is four times more diverse than that of Europe. Arashiyama, where the Hozu River flows and borders the Kyoto basin and mountains, has been a highly popular tourist spot for aristocrats since the Heian period (794-1185).

#4 About  Oimatsu

Oimatsu is a Japanese confectionery founded in 1908 in Kamishichiken, one of the oldest flower streets in Kyoto.

The family lineage of the owner is descended from the court ceremonial officials of the Heian period (794-1185), and we have been producing confectionery for ceremonies and liturgies based on the ancient court tradition of Yukoku-no-Koshitsu and confectionery for the tea ceremony, hence the name of our shop.

Confectionery is a communication tool between people. Through the intangible cultural and social heritage 'Kyoto's confectionery culture', which links Kyoto to the rest of the world, we will tell you about Kyoto's history and culture.

Adapted from the official website of the Kyoto Confectionery Association.

#5 Confectionery making experience

After a talk on the history and background of Kyoto confectionery, visitors will actually make their own confectionery. Enjoy the history and seasons of Kyoto through making sweets.

#6

The type of confectionery is left up to you. The remaining confectionery can be taken home with green tea.

The design of the confectionery differs according to the season.
